Carrie Grethen, partner in crime to William Temple Gault, has escaped from prison. She has also sent Kay Scarpetta a message making it clear she blames her for Gault's death and has plans for revenge. Investigating another case, Scarpetta begins to feel she is being manipulated by an unseen hand.
